Oil and natural gas leak from a well in Alaska

Oil and natural gas leak from a well in Alaskaā€¯

Crews have been unable to fully shut down the well on Alaska's North Slope, which was discovered on Friday; the amount of oil that had been released reportedly is "minor" compared with the volume of natural gas leaking from the well.

In the latest situation report released by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, a BPXA wellhouse in Prudhoe Bay continues leaking gas, but no longer spraying crude oil. "The bottom leak has been reduced, but is now leaking gas as well as some minor amount of crude oil".

BP has previously seen a leak in the Alaska area as well.

In a 2011 settlement with the Department of Justice, BP agreed to pay a $25 million civil penalty and carry out a "system-wide integrity management program" after it spilled more than 5,000 barrels of crude oil from its pipelines on Alaska's North Slope in 2006. Responders attempted to secure the well last night, however, this operation was unsuccessful due to safety concerns and damage to a well pressure gauge. In an incident report released Sunday, however, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation said that the spill does not appear to have spread past the drilling pad around the well, and that there have been no reports of injuries or harm to wildlife. North Slope production was up to 565,000 barrels a day in March, its highest level since December 2013. Specialists deployed by Boots and Coots, a well control company, were arriving in the area yesterday to help seal the well. The well has been shut in since Friday and the response is ongoing, BP spokeswoman Dawn Patience said by email Sunday. Alyeska is a joint partnership led by the North Slope's top producers, BP Plc, Exxon Mobil Corp. and ConocoPhillips. It has averaged a $1.16 premium to WTI this year.
