8-year-old killed in school shooting had survived heart surgery”

This undated photo released by the San Bernardino Police Department shows Karen Elaine Smith, 53. On Friday, a St. Paul, Minnesota man allegedly killed his ex-girlfriend, who he reportedly abused, as well as her sister and father; he also allegedly shot and injured her mother.

San Bernardino, a city of 216,000 people about 60 miles east of Los Angeles, was the site of a December 2015 terror attack that killed 14 people and wounded 22 others at a meeting of San Bernardino County employees.

The two students who were struck by gunfire were standing behind Smith, the police chief said.

On Monday evening, as more than 300 residents gathered at Our Lady of the Assumption Church for a vigil to mourn the dead, the city's history of violence and tragedy was never far from the surface. A husband opened fire on his wife Monday in the elementary school. According to police, Smith had left Anderson, but there were no clues something this drastic would happen.

Smith's mother Irma Sykes says the relationship took a surprising turn soon after the marriage.

"I think this would have been just been too traumatic for him to be here", she said. "They were just her babies", Fields said.

The couple divorced in 1997.

A special-needs teacher slain by her estranged husband at a San Bernardino elementary school is being remembered as someone who loved children.

Smith was doing what every unhelpful spectator who doesn't understand domestic violence suggests women do when they're being abused: She was leaving.

San Bernardino police have said nothing of what might have motivated Anderson to open fire in the special education classroom at North Park Elementary School on Monday.

The 8-year-old who died had Williams syndrome, a rare genetic disorder characterized by learning delays, mild-to-moderate intellectual disabilities and heart problems.

"By all accounts, Jonathan was a happy and friendly child", Burguan said.

Some six weeks earlier, Anderson was a newlywed calling his wife an "angel" in one of many social media posts professing his love. Being that he was Smith's husband (even though the two had been separated for about a month and only married for a few months before that), it probably didn't raise any red flags when he told the employees in the front office that he wanted to drop something off with his wife. Smith moved out of their home and had been staying with family.

"She effectively kept her private life private", Burguan said. He said Anderson wasn't employed but previously had work as a maintenance worker and a pastor. LifeStream is a local, nonprofit blood bank that provides blood products and services to more than 80 Southern California hospitals. The document, however, did not contain information that would indicate it was a suicide note, according to Burguan.
