US regulators aim to keep the ban on in-flight phone calls”

Back in 2013, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States said it would consider allowing travelers to make in-flight calls after special equipment had been successfully deployed in other countries. However, new FCC Chairman Ajit Pai disagreed with the proposal, saying that the plan was "ill-conceived" and that it did not serve the public interest. Most people who ride on planes actually look forward to that rare moment of peace and quiet (well except if there are chattering passengers or crying babies of course) in between the take off and landing.

The 2013 proposal under then-FCC head Tom Wheeler would have allowed for cell phone calls, texting, and other mobile services to be performed inside any aircraft flying about 10,000.

Still, the 2013 initiative sparked protests from groups representing flight attendants, and members of Congress who objected to allowing voice calls on flights.

The FCC initially put the ban in place in 1991 over concerns that cell phone use could block the ground-based relay system.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) wants to move away from allowing passengers to make calls mid-air.

In September 2015, DoT's Advisory Committee for Aviation Consumer Protection recommended that "if safe and secure", the department leave it to the airlines to decide on permitting in-flight voice calls.

Federal regulators have announced that they are going to withdrawal a proposal which was meant to enable air travelers to use their cellphones even on high altitudes. Eventually the DoT also began leaning in the direction of allowing voice calls.

Industry groups including the Telecommunications Industry Association and the Information Technology Industry Council have voiced support for inflight calling.

For example, US Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in December 2013 that his department would consider imposing its own ban on in-flight calls. In 2013, Wheeler emphasized that the ban on phone calls was based on whether cell phones would cause technical disruptions on flights.
