Spurs pair named on shortlist for award for the second year running

The Chelsea duo are joined by Manchester United forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Tottenham striker Harry Kane, Everton's Romelu Lukaku and Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez on the full shortlisted names.

Premier League top-scorer Romelu Lukaku can not be ignored up front, while Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic completes Barton's team, meaning there are no selections from his former club Manchester City or Arsenal.

Tottenham's Dele Alli must be considered a warm favourite to retain the PFA Young Player of the Year Award.

Despite not being nominated for the senior award, Dele is up for the 2016/17 Young Player of the Year award alongside Kane, Lukaku, Sunderland keeper Jordan Pickford, Burnley defender Michael Keane and Manchester City winger Leroy Sane.

With Arsenal looking unlikely to end their 13-year wait for the title, Sanchez has single-handedly kept the North London club in the hunt for a top-four finish with 18 goals this campaign. "I just think he has developed well over the last two and a half seasons", Dyche said.

But Shearer can't comprehend why Alli hasn't been nominated for the full senior player trophy after his enormous season with the north London side.

The 21-year-old has had a breakout season for Tottenham, scoring 16 league goals and earning recognition across Europe. Not only has he confirmed that, he has improved in every aspect of his game.

"In my opinion he deserves to win", he said. "We aren't the shining lights of the Premier League, one of the superpowers".

The Tottenham Hotspur playmaker is the joint leader in assists with De Bruyne, has created more chances than any other Premier League player (89) and has also covered the second most distance, with 358.1km. I think yes. He is showing a great performance every week in every game.
