Google unveils WebVR on Chrome and Android with Google Cardboard”

Google's first brought WebVR to Chrome for Daydream-compatible devices earlier this year. Google expanded on that mission in February with the announcement that its Chrome browser and Daydream platform would support WebVR, which meant you could interact with VR experiences on practically any PC, tablet, or smartphone, albeit in 2D and with limited features. Publishers can now build VR content for any device with the WebVR browser as a WebVR experiment.

In other words, for it to succeed, Google believes there shouldn't be limitations like app stores or a requirement for developers to rewrite apps to support different headsets. Still, it's another sign that Google hasn't abandoned Cardboard, and it makes the process of finding and launching experiences more streamlined, which is especially great because Cardboard-oriented VR is often short and simple. Nonetheless, you can also activate it on your phone or computer using your Chrome browser and a microphone. WebVR allows publishers to build VR content which works on any device which has a browser.

"Voice is especially helpful as a method for freeform interactions, like we saw in Speak to Go, where a user can say any place in the world", Michael DiGiovanni, mobile architect at Isobar, told the IoT Daily. "For something more complex like a game, UX designers need to figure out a way to surface those commands without breaking the immersion of the VR experience". This essentially makes it easier for anyone with an Android phone and the virtual reality headset get immersive experience simply by tapping on a link.

Of course, there aren't that many VR headsets that support WebVR. It added that WebVR support on Chrome for desktop headsets like Oculus Rift and HTC VIVE is "coming soon".
