American Athletic Conference Votes Unanimously to Add Wichita State

American Athletic Conference Votes Unanimously to Add Wichita State”

In 2013, the Shockers were a No.1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and reached the Final Four.

It will officially join the AAC on July 1.

The AAC now has 12 members for football: UCF, Cincinnati, UConn, East Carolina, Houston, Memphis, Navy, SMU, South Florida, Temple, Tulane and Tulsa. The Shockers, who don't have a football team, will become the 12th member of the league for men's and women's basketball and football beginning in 2017-18.

The American Athletic Conference has voted to extend an invitation to Wichita State to join the league.

Aresco acknowledged that the addition will strengthen the conference's upcoming negotiations for a new national TV deal. It also assists any attempt to renegotiate its current TV contract (that runs through 2020) with ESPN.

"We are pleased and proud to welcome Wichita State to The American", American Athletic Conference commissioner Mike Aresco said in a statement Friday.

The focus of the move is men's basketball, where the Shockers have thrived in recent seasons under Gregg Marshall. WSU has dominated the MVC in that period of time, losing just 10 men's basketball conference games, six of them coming in 2013.

The vibe on Wichita State's campus, and across the city was a positive one on Friday. Some of its most basketball-friendly schools - Connecticut, Cincinnati, Memphis, Houston - would love to be elsewhere.

For example, this season, despite being ranked as one of the top 10 teams in the country by almost every available advanced metric, the Shockers earned a No. 10 seed in the tournament. "I wish both of them nothing but the best in their future endeavors".

"We are a rising, major research university", Bardo said.

That is a possibility under the Round Robin format of all ten teams playing each other during the college football regular season.

"You're going to be playing against National Basketball Association guys; bigger, more athletic guys than we've been seeing on a regular basis in the Valley".

Shocker basketball is a money maker, but any dividends it was creating in the Valley were being split in too many directions.

Wichita State has been accepted into the American Athletic Conference.

That foundation and WSU's glittering success since 2011 convinced the American that it could make a rare basketball move in the football-dominated world of athletics. (Wichita State also got seeded No. 11 in the 2016 tournament and got sent to the First Four in Dayton before stomping fellow No. 11 seed Vanderbilt and No. 6 seed Arizona).

"The reason why the Power Five schools are so good is they have so many brand names in one conference", Sampson said. Lonzo Ball never mentioned the injury publicly, but his father says "he's never going to make excuses".
