Reacting to this, PM Narendra Modi on Friday said that this Reflects the importance government is giving to the tourism sector in the country.

The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017, which ranks 136 countries and regions across 14 areas including sustainable economic and societal benefits of tourism, ranked China 15th in the world with an overall score of 5.43 points out of 7.

Completing the top 10 are Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Italy, Canada and Switzerland.

The travel and tourism industry GDP contribution is estimated at 3% or US$373.9 million, creating 28,792 jobs.

Sharma noted that Japan improved by five positions as compared to its last ranking and China gained two ranks, while the USA fell by two positions and Switzerland by four.

Among the 14 pillars were business environment, health and hygiene, global openness, travel and tourism prioritization, environment sustainability, air transport infrastructure, ground and port infrastructure, tourism service infrastructure and natural resources.

While advanced economies still hold the top slots, 12 of the top 15 most improved countries are emerging markets.

In the report, Georgia and Azerbaijan have higher competitiveness and are ranked 70th and 71th respectively. Asia's largest markets are not only becoming larger source markets but also more attractive destinations.

Kazakhstan has improved its position in tourism rating of the World Economic Forum (WEF). Russian Federation is placed at the 43rd position and Turkey is ranked the 44th. "The capacity of countries to respond to and embrace these structural shifts will determine the future success of destinations".

The World Economic Forum produced the report in collaboration with its data partners Bloom Consulting, Deloitte, the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the UNWTO and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).
