Russian PM: Moscow, US on 'the verge of a military clash'

The U.S. officials, however, said they were also reviewing evidence to see if Russian Federation was complicit in the attack on the northern Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun, where more than 80 people were killed.

It is reported that the USA informed Russian Federation of its plans to strike hours ahead, giving it time to remove any aircraft it had stationed at the base.

The U.S. says a sarin-like nerve agent was used.

Acting in response to the US' missile strikes on a Syrian regime airbase, a Russian military spokesperson said Moscow was closing a safety coordination channel with Washington.

"Today, everyone heard the statement of the Defense Ministry, which gave a clear assessment of this step and what motivated it", she was quoted as saying on Russian television station NTV.

The strike, consisting of 59 tomahawk missiles fired from two USA destroyers, was in response to Syria's use of chemical weapons against civilians on Tuesday. Washington says Syrian government forces carried out a poison gas attack in northern Syria this week that killed at least 70 people.

The U.S. officials, however, said they were also reviewing evidence to see if Russian Federation was complicit in the attack on the northern Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun, where more than 80 people were killed.

"President Putin views the USA strikes on Syria as aggression against a sovereign state in violation of the norms of worldwide law and on a made-up up pretext", said a Kremlin statement. Also, the strikes took out the air defense system, all the aircraft hangers and the petroleum storage. The U.S. missile strike could make it all but impossible to improve relations. It said it would cut the hotline that was established after Russian Federation joined Syria's civil war in 2015 to help Syrian President Bashar Assad's government against opposition groups. In the aftermath of the attack, which Syria said killed at least seven people, Russian Federation announced it would suspend its cooperation in the information-sharing campaign, the first time the line has been severed. Eliminating the hotline could enhance the risk of an accident involving the two nuclear powers.

The declarations contradict Russia's claim that it has suspended military "deconfliction" talks after the American cruise missile strikes on Syria. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said Russian Federation will quickly "strengthen the Syrian air defense system and increase its efficiency in order to protect Syria's most sensitive infrastructure facilities".
