NJ Transit to resume full service on Friday

While the tracks are used by all the commuter trains, Amtrak owns them, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said he is holding it responsible for the derailment.

Late Wednesday, Gov. Chris Christie sent a letter to Amtrak's board chairman saying NJ Transit would withhold payments to Amtrak until an independent inspection verifies its Northeast Corridor is in "a state-of-good fix".

The derailments occurred where inbound trains emerge from the tunnel and into a maze of tracks that can take them to 21 different platforms.

New York City Transit honored LIRR tickets at Penn Station on the no 1, 2 and 3 lines and the A, C and E lines.

The compromised wooden beams allowed trains to widen the gauge of the rails, so when a NJ Transit train pulled into Track 9 at Penn on Monday, it "shoved the rails apart", causing the train's wheels to fall off of them, he said.

Amtrak CEO Wick Moorman says he understands Christie is frustrated but added that withholding money "is not going to solve any of the problems".

Santoro wants Amtrak to form a team of rail experts from NJ Transit, Amtrak and LIRR to "walk every inch of track" at Penn Station and perform an exhaustive inspection analysis of tracks and signals around the station.

John Porcari, a former deputy US secretary of transportation who is the interim head of the development corporation overseeing Gateway, said a new tunnel wouldn't have prevented the two recent derailments.

Amtrak's CEO says that a train derailment in NY that has caused major delays for commuters at the nation's busiest rail hub was caused when a track split after the train went over a weakened wooden railroad tie.

Amtrak has been under fire for days now, both from beleaguered commuters and from the heads of various agencies affected by the derailments.

In 2015, the federal government agreed to a 50-50 split of the cost with the states of New Jersey and NY and the project is now in the permitting phase. Cross-honoring will still be in effect.

The lines had been running on a holiday schedule which cut service and resulted in delays and overcrowding for commuters. Midtown Direct trains were diverted to Hoboken.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says it has canceled 10 Long Island Rail Road trains into Manhattan for Friday's morning rush hour and terminated four others at stations in Queens. Plans for Friday's commute have not been announced. Customers on trains arriving/departing New York Penn Station may experience delays up to 50 minutes during rush hours and up to 25 minutes during non-rush hours.

Amtrak for Thursday warned of modified service and delays for its Northeast Regional line operating between Washington and NY.

U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez's spokesman said the Democrat spoke with Moorland on Thursday morning and continues to monitor the situation. But Metro-North advises customers that train service from Secaucus will be reduced in accordance with information released by NJ TRANSIT.
