Vladimir Putin HATES this meme so much Russian Federation banned it”

The court that issued the ban order said the image "hints at the Russian president's allegedly nonstandard sexual orientation".

The saga of the banned Putin clown actually began years ago, when a man posted a slew of offensive images to a Russian Facebook clone.

In fact, ever since the virulently homophobic Putin, with help from the Russian Orthodox Church, pushed through a law effectively outlawing openly gay people, the country's LGBT community has been plagued by violence.

The image first appeared in response to a 2013 law banning "propaganda of homosexuality among minors", a law which restricts human rights and has fuelled homophobia.

Russian authorities have banned an image depicting President Vladimir Putin as a gay clown as they think it to be extremist 'content'.

It first appeared up after Russian Federation introduced its controversial "gay propaganda" law in 2013, which banned promotion of prostitution to minors and made it illegal to pass out gay rights materials.

One thought is that it could be an image showing Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in white face paint and holding flowers.

Neither the Tver court's ruling nor the Justice Ministry designation indicates whether the photograph of Putin or the caption was the determining factor in deeming the image illegal.

The Russian Ministry of Justice last week added the photo to its index of extremist materials ― a list that now includes more than 4,000 images that are illegal to share.

Many ultranationalists accuse Putin and his government of being too tolerant of minority groups.

The mocked-up image shows Mr Putin with heavy makeup, red lips and long eyelashes, similar to the one above.
