YouTube Is Officially in the Live TV Game Now

YouTube TV's lineup covers more than 50 channels, including ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, ESPN, Fox Sports networks, and Comcast SportsNet.

At launch, it's only available in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia, thanks to regional broadcasting restrictions.

Those who are able to tune into YouTube TV on Wednesday won't find anything different from what was unveiled in late February.

"However, don't count traditional providers out either, because there are still plenty of sports fans who haven't embraced smart TVs and streaming devices and expect to find their favorite live sports on their favorite cable or satellite provider". YouTube's live TV-streaming service can be accessed by users in five United States locations today: New York, Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, and Philadelphia.

Ultimately, though, YouTube TV is about YouTube getting more of its core users - 18- to 34-year-olds - to spend more time on its platforms. When announced, YouTube TV boasted 40 networks as well as local programming from area news channels and weather services. While not available yet, AMC, BBC America, IFC, and Sundance TV are on their way. Premium channels like Showtime are available for an additional fee. But Google-owned YouTube TV offers several features the others don't. Google is also throwing in access to original programming that was previously tied to the YouTube Red subscription service.

Time Warner and Viacom channels like CNN, TNT, MTV, Comedy Central and HBO aren't included. While other streaming services offer up one week free trials, YouTube is giving subscribers 30 days totally free to get a feel for the service. Bundlers like YouTube need to make tough decisions about which networks to include, otherwise they'll end up with the same sky-high prices that are making cable less attractive. Subscribers can record unlimited shows (as many as you want simultaneously even), and those shows will be saved for up to 9 months.

We hope to get our hands on YouTube TV soon.
