Second juvenile arrested in connection with Facebook Live sexual assault

Second juvenile arrested in connection with Facebook Live sexual assault”

Chicago authorities on Saturday said they had arrested a 14-year-old boy in connection with the sexual assault of a teenage girl by multiple young men that was seen on Facebook Live in March.

The teens - a 14-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy - face charges including aggravated criminal sexual assault and manufacturing and disseminating child pornography, police said in a statement.

Police continue to search for others involved in the attack, which took place in the Lawndale neighborhood.

Gardener said the girl was threatened with the release of a pit bull if she tried to get away.

At least 40 people were watching the live stream, but none of them reported it, police said.

Judge Patricia Mendoza, assigned to the Juvenile Division, ordered Tuesday that the 15-year-old boy be held in custody, calling the gang rape "one of the most serious cases that I have seen". The 15-year-old was lured in house's basement where she was assaulted by the boy and his friend.

"Both videotaped these egregious actions", Assistant State's Attorney Maha Gardner said in court Tuesday.

The girl's police interview also revealed a disturbing fact. But they have said that, besides the cellphone camera that recorded the incident and streamed it live on Facebook, others at the scene also recorded the sexual assault.

The investigation into the attack was fast-tracked because of a chance encounter the victim's mother had with Police Supt.

Guglielmi has said police were not aware of the attack until the girl's mother approached Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson as he was leaving a police station on the city's West Side and showed him the video.

Police said that authorities have looked into possible charges against those who watched the video and bullied the girl but said that making charges stick appears to be a complicated task. The department contacted Facebook to take down the video, which it did.

It was between then and the following morning when her mother saw the live broadcast.

The girl was found about 7:45 a.m. on March 21 at the intersection of 16th and Independence by 10th District officers, police said.

"She is truly traumatized but detectives are incredibly inspired and motivated by her strength and courage", he wrote, adding that "several young men" are still sought by police in the case.
