Brewers' Guerra, Rockies' Gray had different roads to opener”

Villar also bobbled a relay throw at second on what could have been an inning-ending double play on a sharp bouncer by Blackmon, allowing Reynolds to score from third for a 5-4 lead.

Even though Milwaukee has hung around in the first two games of the series, the fact of the matter is that Colorado still won the game regardless of how close it was. With the Brewers lacking a true ace, Guerra earned the opening day start from manager Craig Counsell. No, in each of these eight starts, he allowed four or more earned runs, and had games in which he surrendered eight and nine runs on August 7 and May 19, respectfully.

Holland tossed a ideal ninth for the Rockies, who have opened the season with 8 1/3 scoreless innings from their bullpen.

Gerardo Parra and Mark Reynolds, a pair of former Brewers, look comfortable back in Milwaukee, too. Anderson has just part of a big league season under his belt, and Chatwood has seen his promising career delayed by Tommy John surgery in 2014.

Rockies: OF David Dahl (rib) and IF Ian Desmond (left hand) were among six players placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday, retroactive to March 30. After a walk by Story, Parra topped things off with a three-run double to right-center, giving the Rockies a 4-1 lead. Aguilar pinch hit in the fifth and his single to left on the first pitch helped the Brewers rally for five runs. Calling up Suter instead of, say, Tyler Cravy ensures there's at least one lefty in the bullpen in the event Milone makes a start or two.

Milwaukee, meanwhile, committed three errors and watched starter Junior Guerra leave with a calf strain after three innings. He hit a two-run double as did Jonathan Villar in an exciting five-run fifth inning.

The Brewers had the potential tying run on third later in the sixth, but Orlando Arcia struck out swinging with two outs against reliever Carlos Estevez.

The Brewers' opening day matchup is Monday against the Colorado Rockies at 1:10 Milwaukee. Milwaukee RHP Matt Garza, on the DL with a right groin injury, threw off a mound before batting practice and could start a rehab stint at Triple-A early next week. It's up to Gray to limit the valleys as much as he can while focusing on prolonging those peaks, like he did at points past year. Peralta had a 0.71 ERA in three spring training appearances without getting a decision.

And instead of a sparkling stat line to start the season, Gray's final line settled in at 5 runs on 6 hits, 2 walks and 7 strikeouts in 4-plus innings pitched.
