Susan Rice asked that names of Trump transition officials be 'unmasked'

Specifically, this provision outlines several possible justifications upon which the government can rely to claim the unmasking was necessary, such as if the information indicates the USA person is an agent of a foreign power, is engaged in the unauthorized disclosure of classified information, may be involved in a crime, or may be the target of hostile intelligence activities of a foreign power.

RICE: Well, Andrea, this is not anything political has been alleged. "Unmasking" private USA citizens to make their names appear on intelligence reports is not illegal when tied to a legitimate investigation, but civil libertarians warn the process could be used to skirt regulations that prevent the federal government from spying on Americans.

Ms Rice also rejected claims that she leaked information to U.S. media. The names of USA citizens are normally redacted, or blocked out, in intelligence reports under the federal Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

When asked about President Trump's unsubstantiated claims, Ms Rice said she was "surprised" and "shocked", calling it a "very serious allegation that has no basis in fact". The review was prompted by a belief that there were inefficiencies in the current procedures and concerns over a policy change made in the closing days of the Obama administration, according to the official, who insisted on anonymity in order to disclose the sensitive information. Ask her whether President Obama ordered this or whether he knew about it.

She was pressed on MSNBC about whether she had exposed Mr Trump's former National Security Adviser, Michael Flynn, who was forced to resign in February after misleading the White House about his conversations with the Russian ambassador.

Conservative social media agitator Mike Cernovich reported on Monday that the White House Counsel's office had "identified" Rice as asking for the names of "incoming Trump officials", during an internal review of document logs.

"I leaked nothing to nobody". The Arkansas senator also noted that to request an unmasking would still be a "momentous" decision, given the minimization protocols that are set in place to protect the privacy of Americans. For instance, the foreigners could be talking about an American by name.

MITCHELL: And you could have asked for those names - American #1, American #2, however it is identified, to be unmasked so you would know how significant it was?

In mid-March, House intelligence committee chairman Devin Nunes abruptly announced he had seen "troubling" information about spy agencies widely spreading the identities of Trump associates. In order to protect the privacy rights of those US persons, the government has imposed procedures for "minimizing" or "masking" those persons' identities.

Many on Twitter were quick to note that two people with prominent access to the president were praising the words and actions of a man who had made many claims they found extremely objectionable. She also offered some questionable explanations for the demasking process.
