Joe Thornton hurt in Sharks' 3-1 win over Canucks

Joe Thornton hurt in Sharks' 3-1 win over Canucks”

Canucks: At San Jose on Tuesday night to start a two-game trip before returning home for a home-and-home against Edmonton next weekend. The Oilers, who have a game in hand on San Jose, visit the Kings tonight.

Following three successful years in junior, this first-round Sharks draft pick has split his first professional season between San Jose and the team's American Hockey League affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda.

Head coach Peter DeBoer didn't have an update on Thornton's injury, saying he would be checked out Monday in San Jose.

Sharks: Tomas Hertl. Without Thornton and Couture for the forseeable future, Hertl will be an important player for the Sharks and will look to build off of his game in Vancouver on Sunday when he snapped a 16-game goal drought with two scores in the first period.

Thornton, 37, was able to leave the arena "under his own power and without crutches but with a clear limp", according to the San Jose Mercury News.

"You can't roll over and just quit", DeBoer said.

"I thought it was a gutsy effort by us", DeBoer said.

Sven Baertschi's goal with less than four minutes to play Sunday helped the Canucks avoid being blanked for the second time in three games. "So I think if anyone can handle it, we can". It takes something positive to get out energy up. He'll face Richard Bachman, who will be playing in just his fourth game of the season (2-1-0, 1.69 GAA, .946 SP).

"I need to show my best game with these guys missing", said Hertl, who missed 32 games after November 21 knee surgery. "For me, I expect some goals". Sometimes you're trying so hard and everything's going wrong. Patrick Marleau, who filled in on the top line after Thornton left the game, scored with 2.6 seconds left on an empty net to seal the win after a handful of dicey moments inside the Sharks' zone.

Hertl added another goal at the 12:51 mark, as he collected a loose puck after a shot on goal by Marc-Edouard Vlasic and scored his 10th of the season from a sharp angle with Canucks goalie Ryan Miller unable to get over in time.

Canucks forward Jayson Megna cut left to right through the slot with speed on a 1-on-1 rush against defenseman Paul Martin, but Jones stayed with him and got his left arm on his high shot.

"It was a little weird stepping out on the ice, warming up in the wrong end", said Hansen, who played parts of 10 seasons in Vancouver before getting traded on February 28. After scoring in his first game with the Canucks on March 4, Goldobin is scoreless in his last nine games. Thornton has seven goals and 43 assists.

"The rest of the guys responded and got a much-needed two points for us". But I think we're confident as a group that we're a team that's a sum of our parts and not about one or two guys, anyway.
