Konta Battles Wozniacki For Miami Open

Konta Battles Wozniacki For Miami Open”

Johanna Konta is back in the winner's circle for the second time this season after a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Caroline Wozniacki to capture the 2017 Miami Open championship Saturday.

Wozniacki has been at this level many times before, the comparative experience level of the two players emphasising just how much of a relative newcomer Konta remains at this level. It would prove to be decisive as Konta broke, putting the Brit just two games away.

But former world number one Wozniacki, wearing down Pliskova with her solid defence, ran out a comfortable victor in the following two sets to earn a third final appearance of the year. She was ranked 150th in the world at the end of 2014 and improved to 47th in 2015, but her biggest improvement came past year.

"I am going to have a tough battle on my hands", Konta said.

After victory in Sydney in January, it is Konta's second title of the year while Wozniacki, despite her welcome return to form, has now lost three finals since February having been beaten in Doha and Dubai. Wozniacki used all of her vaunted endurance to run tirelessly after every ball, but was undone by a weak serve.

"I think the fortunate position that I'm in is we have someone called Andy Murray who, bless him, has I think carried most of that weight on his shoulders", she said after her third straight win over Williams.

World number 20 Strycova said: "I think it's not OK. But I got a good start to the second set and that got me going, got me grinding". We can not honestly say she looked to have enjoyed this one much better either, at the time but you have to feel for Wozniacki. "I've won a lot of matches this year".

"I remember I played very well that match".

Johanna Konta's fortunes continue to shine as she out-nerved Caroline Wozniacki for the biggest title of her career so far. I guess Miami may have a certain just more history possibly. They do not sound too glamorous but this is only one tier below the Grand Slams - the tournaments that it no longer seems fanciful to say she could win.

Strycova, a 31-year-old Czech, nearly walked away from the sport in February 2013 when she was banned after testing positive for the stimulant sibutramine, which she unknowingly ingested when taking a slimming aid.
