After HB2 revision, ACC says North Carolina can again host championship events

On Thursday, North Carolina legislators passed House Bill 142 to repeal HB2 and fix the state's reputation.

Deutsche Bank, which in response to HB 2 froze plans to create 250 jobs at its location in Cary, North Carolina, declined to comment on Thursday. "Instead, they're reinforcing the worst aspects of the law", he said in a statement. "HB142 only continues this discrimination by barring cities from passing non-discrimination protections until 2020 and making it illegal for cities to pass transgender protection". The nation's largest gay and transgender rights organization called it "simply a new version of HB2 that abandons LGBTQ people".

Jenner has been under fire from some in the LGBT community who think that she is not a fair representation of trans women, and she has no business speaking for them in public forums. How does it do that when so many elements of the original problematic law, HB2, remain in place? Gov. Roy Cooper later signed the bill. "Companies that I have talked to, companies that I have recruited, who were hesitant or refusing to bring businesses to our state before the passage of today's bill now are telling me: We are coming".

NCAA officials, who moved several championships out of North Carolina previous year and threatened to blackball the state as an event host as long as House Bill 2 remained on the books, said they would decide next week whether the state had returned to its good graces.

"Any fan was really annoyed by the fact we don't get to see those", McFall said.

While state legislators and Gov. Roy Cooper are hailing this as a last-minute collaborative victory, it looks to me a lot more like smearing lipstick on a pig.

North Carolina's struggle over HB2 offered an unexpected opportunity for neighboring SC, where recent college basketball tournament games that would have been played in Greensboro and Raleigh went across the state line.

"The ACC Council of Presidents has voted that North Carolina will again be considered for hosting future ACC Championships".

"I think it's far from a panacea". He says if the General Assembly's Republican majority and the Democratic governor enact their negotiated deal, it will postpone LGBT protections for four years until local governments could be allowed to tackle changes.

NCAA president Mark Emmert said Thursday that the NCAA's board of governors will decide next week if it will again consider North Carolina venues as host sites for future championship events.

The sporting stakes are not small: Five years of upcoming NCAA events, the 2019 and 2020 ACC basketball tournaments and other ACC events, the viability of MLS expansion bids in Raleigh and Charlotte and the NBA All-Star Game all rest on how this partial repeal is perceived. "This new bill continues to stand in the way of that", McKinney CEO Brad Brinegar said.

"Fake repeal of HB2 leads to [a] real lawsuit from us", the American Civil Liberties Union tweeted Thursday, adding that they were urging Cooper to veto the compromise.

"The legislature, [by] yielding to the NCAA and their threats and the corporate bullies, saying that they needed to repeal HB 2, actually took a step back", he said on Washington Watch on Thursday.

The NCAA boycotted SC through the previous 15 years, in response to the Confederate flag that flew at the Statehouse. They reacted, and they sent House Bill 2 through very quickly during a swift, one-day special session.

When word leaked Wednesday that Republican leaders and Cooper had hammered out a deal to repeal HB2, the clock was ticking for groups on the left and right to try and put their spin on it. But true progress has not been made for North Carolinians who deserve protection, and they are no safer than they were when this debacle began.
