UN chief presses Iraq's leaders to reconcile once Mosul won

FILE - Residents carry the body of several people killed during fights between Iraq security forces and Islamic State on the western side of Mosul, Iraq, March 24, 2017.

"The Iraqi people have proved their ability to defeat terrorism and to expel IS militants".

According to the same source, who spoke anonymously due to restrictions on talking to reporters, meetings will tackle the ongoing campaign to recapture Mosul from the Daesh terrorist group and the steadily mounting numbers of civilians displaced by the fighting. "The situation is very good and the Iraqi air force is doing well". The militant group still holds territory in the country's west, as well as in Syria.

"Just arrived in Iraq to focus on the dire humanitarian situation on the ground. Protection of civilians must be the absolute priority", Guterres wrote on Twitter.

Jaafari stressed on Iraq's call on the global organisation to "adopt a draft to criminalise the terrorist ideology and fight extremism in order to protect the societies from the risk of recruiting their sons in terrorist groups", the statement said.

"Iraq needs a plan similar to the Marshall Plan.to present assistance to Iraqis and support development and overcome the effect of war against (IS) terrorist gangs", Jaafari said, according to his office.

The US-led coalition carrying out strikes against IS said it had "probably" played a role in civilian deaths in west Mosul, while the Iraqi government has sought to blame the casualties on the jihadists.

The Marshall Plan was an initiative launched by the United States to aid Western Europe to recover from devastation after the World War II.

Guterres met with Iraq's president and parliament speaker as well as the prime minister.
