Ex punk-rocker O'Rourke launches longshot bid against Cruz

Rep. Joaquin Castro told The Houston Chronicle he would announce his decision in April as to whether he will run for Senate on the Democrat ticket.

O'Rourke's campaign team sent an email to supporters Wednesday morning revealing that "a big announcement" was coming Friday.

O'Rourke will likely face a steep uphill battle running in a red state against the conservative firebrand. "We both agreed‎ that we've got to come to our decisions about the whether to enter the race", Castro said.

A House Democrat who first took office in 2013 reportedly plans to challenge Sen.

Par for the Democratic course, O'Rourke endorsed Hillary for President in 2016 and served as a superdelegate at the Democratic convention. According to the Texas Tribune, U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro of San Antonio is weighing a run himself. An ardent proponent of term limits for members of Congress, he self-imposed a limit of four terms on his time in the House, meaning he would not be running for reelection in 2020.

O'Rourke said he speaks to Castro daily.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz will soon have a challenger in his bid to retain his seat in the Senate. In the 2014 primaries, about 28,000 voters turned out in El Paso County, while nearly 42,000 cast ballots in Castro's home turf of Bexar County. At the other end of the spectrum are the die-hard Trump fans who haven't forgiven Cruz's "vote your conscience" advice en lieu of a Trump endorsement at the Republican National Convention.

O'Rourke grabbed national headlines earlier in March when he took a bipartisan road trip across the U.S. with Representative Will Hurd (R-TX) after a winter storm in the East Coast grounded flights to DC.

From a national perspective, the U.S. Senate race in Texas is an afterthought. Will Hurd (R-Texas) after an East Coast storm grounded all flights to Washington. An able campaigner, the Texas senator boosted his national prominence previous year after finishing second in the crowded 2016 GOP presidential primary.
