Shots fired near Capitol, suspect in custody

The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday near the U.S. Capitol grounds between the area of the Botanic Gardens and the Rayburn Building.

According to an earlier witness report - quoted by the Associated Press - the police ordered a woman driving a vehicle that was approaching the checkpoint to stop.

According to the spokesperson, the event is considered to be a criminal incident, not terrorism.

Her family later said she had been suffering from postpartum depression and psychosis. She said the U.S. Capitol remains open.

A woman, center, is taken into custody on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, March 29, 2017.

The agency also said that the suspect had no "previous history" with the agency.

It is being described as a traffic stop.

Yanta, 58, said the auto was speeding and there were marked and unmarked police cars behind it.

"It went by us so fast", Yanta said.

Authorities confirmed that police shot their weapons during the arrest, but no one was hurt.

There have been several other recent security incidents at the White House. "It was very much reassuring to see the quick response", he said. Capitol Police are not trained to fire warrning shots but are instructed to use deadly force to mitigate the threat.

The driver made a U-turn, almost striking several officers in the process. The dental hygienist who drove to D.C. from CT had her one-year-old daughter in the auto.
