Mets' Familia banned after domestic violence arrest

New York Mets All-Star pitcher Jeurys Familia has been suspended 15 games without pay for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy.

Familia was arrested on October 31 in Fort Lee, N.J., after his wife, Bianca Rivas, called authorities and said that her husband was getting violent and drunk. Ultimately, charges were dropped against both players, Familia and his wife cooperated with the state's attorney during the investigation. In addition, Manfred, in his statement, noted Familia already has undergone 12 90-minute sessions with a counselor specializing in domestic abuse and that his office received "a favorable evaluation" from the counselor.

Familia will not appeal the suspension and can continue participating in spring training and exhibition games prior to Mets' Opening Day game on Monday against the Atlanta Braves.

That's not fair to Familia, nor is it fair to future victims of domestic violence.

For his part, Familia reiterated he never physically harmed his wife.

Commissioner Rob Manfred met with Familia on Monday to discuss the incident, which took place October 31 in Fort Lee, New Jersey.

Prior to the suspension being handed down, numberFire's metrics projected Familia to record 37 saves in 2017 while posting a 2.74 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 24.5 strikeout percentage.

Familia said in a statement that he did not harm Rivas, but he "did, however, act in an unacceptable manner and am terribly disappointed in myself". I am alone to blame for the problems of that evening, ' the statement further said.

Familia was arrested on a simple assault charge on October 31, and though the charge was later dropped, he was still subject to penalties under Major League Baseball policies.

Baseball's domestic violence policy, adopted in 2015, differs from the sport's drug policy in that there are no specific punishments. 'Nevertheless, I have concluded that Mr. Familia's overall conduct that night was inappropriate'. He also apologized to the Mets' organization, his teammates and his fans, and said he looked forward to rejoining the squad. Almost five months after he was arrested and charged with assault after an incident involving his wife at their Fort Lee home, the Mets closer said he took the blame for what happened that night. What is it going to take for not just Major League Baseball but all of professional sports to stop all of this domestic violence because suspensions of 20-25% of the season is just not cutting it at all?
