Ford Recall 2017: 440000 Vehicles May Cause Fire, Door Hinge Trouble

Ford Recall 2017: 440000 Vehicles May Cause Fire, Door Hinge Trouble”

The move will affect Ford's bottom line in the first quarter of the year, cutting pretax earnings by $295 million.

The vehicles are at risk of fire because, in some cases, there's not enough coolant fluid circulating, causing the engine to overheat and crack the car's cylinder head, which can result in an oil leak, the company stated.

Ford is recalling more than 570,000 vehicles in North America and Europe to fix separate problems that can cause engine fires and doors to fly open unexpectedly. But 29 cases of fires have been reported. Customers can drive their vehicles, but should go to a dealer if there are issues with its coolant.

In Europe, the recall includes the 2010 through 2015 C-Max hybrid and Focus small vehicle, as well as the 2013 through 2015 Transit Connect van. Dealers also will check coolant levels for owners.

Ford will mail customers instructions from the owner's manual on how to check and refill coolant.

Since the 2015 recall, there are almost 757,000 cars that are being brought back, including the newly recalled cars.

The Dearborn automaker had previously recalled almost 4 million vehicles for door latch issues in six separate recalls since 2014, including 2.4 million vehicles recalled in late 2016.

The company is also recalling 211,000 2014 Fiesta and 2013 and 2014 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in 2015 it had 1,102 reports related to the problem and Ford said it had 10,883 warranty claims related to door latch failures.

In October, NHTSA opened a preliminary investigation into 440,000 Ford 2011-2013 Edge SUVs over door latch warning light issues.

The Problem: The pawl spring tab in the side door latch could fracture or break, which could cause the door to not latch, increasing the risk of an injury. Ford said it knows of at least one accident and three injuries within the 2 million cars it recalled in September.

The cost of the latest recall is included in Ford's most recent earnings guidance, the company said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
