Update on Koeman's potential move to manage the Netherlands' national team

Arjen Robben pulled no punches in his damning assessment of Netherlands' performance in their 2-0 World Cup qualifying loss to Bulgaria on Saturday. He also sent on veteran Wesley Sneijder in an attempt to spark more creativity in midfield.

The 2-0 defeat - their second in qualifying in just five games - saw them leapfrogged by their opponents and leaves them well adrift of Group A leaders France and Sweden.

Danny Blind handed a first cap to 17-year-old Matthijs de Ligt, but the centre-back's first action did not bode well, as he gave away a free kick just outside the penalty area inside the first minute with a rash challenge on Ivelin Popov. Beaten finalists at the World Cup in South Africa, they went on to finish third in Brazil. Failure to qualify for Russian Federation next year, on the back of failure to reach the 2016 Euro finals, would be a major shock for one of the most successful footballing nations who were World Cup finalists as recently as 2010 when they lost to Spain.

After the match, Blind accepted responsibility for the shock defeat, which was sure to lead to questions about his leadership. "We have a lot of players like Kevin Strootman, Georginio Wijnaldum and Bas Dost who are perfectly fine at a decent level and some of the younger players might do something spectacular in the future" says Jongsma.

But De Ligt's dream debut quickly became a nightmare, making two fatal errors in the first 20 minutes before suffering the indignity of being substituted at half time to save further humiliation.

Former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal will help the Dutch FA find a new coach after Danny Blind's sacking this week.

KNVB director Jean-Paul Decossaux had earlier said at a press conference that Koeman would be the type of candidate they were looking for.

Decossaux revealed "all options are options" with regards to the prospect of eventually appointing a foreign coach, something which the KNVB have not done since Austrian Ernst Happel guided Holland to the 1978 World Cup final.

Koeman, manager of Premier League club Everton, has told Dutch media he is not available.

While Cristiano Ronaldo kept moving up Europe's all-time scorers list, a demoralising loss to Bulgaria endangered the Netherlands' World Cup qualification.
