Firefighters battle major building fire in Oakland, California

It is unclear how many people were rescued from the fire, according to fire officials.

The building is reportedly a residential treatment facility.

Three people who were rescued were injured.

A single-alarm fire at a two-story Redwood Avenue home that started in the basement was quickly put out by firefighters early Sunday evening, according to deputy fire chief Pablo Del Valle.

Hours later, firefighters continued with suppression efforts.

Ruben Deon Mitchell Jr. said he was awakened shortly after 4 a.m. Monday to screams of a fire in the Oakland building where he lived on the first floor. They were on the third floor and said the hallways were filled with flames.

Crews had not confirmed the death, he said. But the roofs and the walls became dangerously unstable because of the blaze, and firefighters were forced out of the building and had to fight it from the outside, he said. Other residents told KTVU-TV reporters Monday that they escaped on their own.

Last December, 36 people were killed when a fire erupted at a dance party at a sprawling, two-store warehouse in Oakland known as the Ghost Ship that had been leased to an artists' collective.
