Attorney General Sessions urges Maryland not to become sanctuary stateā€

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced in a press conference Monday that the US government planned actions-most notably the pulling of federal funds-against so-called sanctuary cities and states for undocumented immigrants.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Monday the Justice Department will begin withholding grants to so-called sanctuary cities, a plan that could result in Providence losing out on more than $600,000 a year.

"Moreover", he said, "the Department of Justice will require that jurisdictions seeking or applying for Department of Justice grants to certify compliance with [8 U.S.C. Section] 1373 as a condition for receiving those awards".

Greg Abbott has led a similar push to crack down on sanctuary cities, pulling funds from Travis County after its sheriff announced a new policy around compliance with federal immigration authorities. Upstate communities including Syracuse, Rochester, Kingston, Newburgh and Ithaca have all identified themselves as sanctuary cities in recent months or even earlier.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions' appearance at the daily White House briefing is a signal that President Trump wants to move on to one of the issues he's most comfortable talking about - illegal immigration - and to shift the conversation away from health care, after his failure last week to get the GOP alternative to replace and repeal the Affordable Care Act through Congress.

Travis County receives just over $50 million from both federal and state grants, according to estimates from Eckhardt's office.

"But I hope the American people and their constituents in their own cities will communicate with them", Sessions said.

Sessions said he "strongly urges" these cities, known as sanctuary cities, to "consider carefully" the damage they are doing to national security and public safety by refusing to enforce immigration laws.

But several studies have found that immigrants are far less likely to commit crimes than USA -born residents and, according to the libertarian Cato Institute, among us residents between the ages of 18 and 54, 1.53% of native-born Americans are incarcerated, compared to just 0.85% of undocumented immigrants.

The report also noted one case in Westchester County on February 1.

Sessions was asked by reporter April Ryan about Eric Garner and if his murder was a hate crime.

Immigrant-rights groups knocked the pressure from the Trump administration.
