Pakistan to observe 10th Earth Hour today

At Jammu, Raj Bhawan Jammu observed the Earth Hour on Saturday evening by switching off all non-essential lights at 8:30 PM, for one hour.

Past year over 150 countries across the world, switched off their lights for an hour to support action to create a sustainable future for the planet.

In October 2007 San Francisco ran its own "Lights Out" program inspired by the Sydney Earth Hour.

"This is more than a year ago when Delhi had saved around 230 MW", a spokesperson of power major BSES said here.

WWF-AAPSO will also be campaigning throughout Assam in schools and colleges, organisations, corporate and institutes to encourage switching off of lights and promote usage of solar energy.

Earth Hour is the world's largest grassroots movement to combat climate change.

Organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Earth Hour is an annual environmental campaign that aims to increase awareness on the effects of climate change.

Between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm yesterday, several landmarks across the globe turned off their lights showing support for the cause. Earth Hour has one big agenda: to unite people to protect the planet, support for a low pollution, and clean energy future.

From the Clifton Suspension Bridge to the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building to the Brandenburg Gate, thousands of landmarks switched off their lights to urge action on climate change.

On the other hand, the Visayas, the group of islands in the central part of the Philippines, recorded a reduction of 44 MW, an improvement of 47% from 30 MW a year ago.

Nelson Mandela Square and Sandton City will be joined by a number of businesses in the district, with the likes of RMB, Deutsche Securities, Discovery, SAB Miller, Webber Wentzel and Nedbank also taking part in Earth Hour 2017. The objective of the initiative is to encourage individuals, businesses, and governments around the world to become more conscious of their ecological footprint and engage in dialog to seek real solutions to our growing environmental challenges.

When it comes to climate change, the question is no longer is it happening? but how quickly is our planet changing? and by how much will it change due to carbon emissions?

Scott says past year over 178 countries and territories participated in Earth Hour.
