Trump announces Keystone XL approval

President Donald Trump is calling his administration's approval of the Keystone XL pipeline a new era for American energy policy. On Friday, the Trump administration issued a permit to proceed with construction on one of the pipelines, the Keystone XL, Clifford Krauss reports for theNew York Times.

The pipeline would transport 800,000 barrels per day from Canada's oilsands production fields to refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Having served as the CEO of Exxon-Mobile, the U.S.'s largest oil company, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had recused himself from the process.

However, South Dakota Democratic Party Executive Director Suzanne Jones Pranger said the pipeline will not have a positive impact on residents. TransCanada, a Calgary-based firm, has been trying to win approval for the pipeline for several years.

A group adamantly opposed to the Keystone XL oil pipeline vows to raise up resistance against the project once again.

And Greenpeace says it will pressure banks not to finance the multi-billion dollar project.

What are your thoughts on the Keystone Pipeline? Construction on the pipeline won't begin until those other permits are issued.

BOLD Nebraska founder and president of BOLD Alliance, Jane Kleeb, points out TransCanada doesn't have a permit to build in Nebraska.

Four days after Trump was sworn into office, he invited TransCanada to resubmit its application for the pipeline. Some analysts think only two of the three pipelines will get built. "This is one way it will enable them to do that", said Thune.

President Trump also insisted that the pipeline be made with US steel and that the USA should get "a piece of the profits", which would lower the project's margins.

In November 2015, after years of foot-dragging, Barack Obama finally blocked the Keystone XL Pipeline.

Environmental groups have expressed that they will do everything in their power to fight the Keystone Pipeline's approval, including protests, petitions and political pressures.

Russ Girling, president of TransCanada, called the permit a "significant milestone" in the years-long project. He echoed the argument of environmental groups that Keystone would encourage use of carbon-heavy tar sands oil, contributing heavily to global warming.

Mr. Obama in 2015 rejected the pipeline after years of study, saying it would undercut US credibility in the worldwide climate change negotiations that culminated later that year in a global deal in Paris.

TransCanada spokesman Terry Cunha said the company recognizes that construction activities would occur on tribes' ancestral homelands.

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., said the announcement is "important to renewing the United States' commitment toward mutually beneficial energy solutions with Canada".

Under former President Barack Obama, the State Department conducted an assessment that found the $8 billion project would not lower gas prices for USA consumers as its proponents claimed.

The presidential approval was hailed by supporters of the pipeline like the American Petroleum Institute, a major lobby group for the U.S. oil and gas industry, whose president Jack Gerard in a statement lauded the move as "welcome news" that is "critical to creating American jobs, growing the economy, and making our nation more energy secure".
