Brazilian Beef Banned by Several Countries After Reports of Rotten Meat Imports

St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN); St. Kitts and Nevis could impose a ban on imported meat and ready-to-eat meat products from Brazil as early as Thursday (Mar 23), which will include tinned corned beef.

According to the Associated Press, Brazilian authorities have launched an investigation into the alleged sale and export of expired meat by the country's major meat and poultry suppliers.

He said the same approach is taken for meat and pork factories, as well.

"Even if it is a handful of bad actors, the issue is that those bad actors are tainting the entire culture of meat production in the country", he said.

A spokeswoman for Sun Art Retail, which operates 400 Chinese hypermarkets, said on Wednesday the chain had removed beef supplied by top Brazilian exporters BRF SA and JBS SA from its shelves from Monday.

This disclosure has come from senior veterinary officer Dr Mark Trotman, who said that due to concerns about the possibility of adulterated corned beef from Brazil entering Barbados, the ban had been effected pending further investigation as to whether any of the product had come into the island.

The European Union has called for a partial ban on the meat. The retailer, with 84 stores in China, does not sell Brazilian beef.

Supermarket Association of T&T (SATT) president Dr Yunus Ibrahim said yesterday that members are ready to remove product from shelves once it is officially confirmed that there is tainted corned beef in the country. China is the biggest export market for Brazilian meat, buying about a third of the US$5.5 billion of beef shipped from Latin America's largest economy past year.

The number of countries that have either suspended or curtailed imports of meat from Brazil has risen to at least 35, FoodBev understands.

Other countries including China and European countries have also to some degree suspended meat imports from Brazil after the scandal.

Egypt is among the world's main importers of meat and poultry from Brazil. "The [agriculture] ministry has a huge job ahead of it", he said.

Numerous world's major economies have taken action after plants belonging to meat companies BRF, JBS and Grupo Peccin were targeted by police.
