Walker twists ankle at home but Pochettino upbeat over Kane

It is one of only three victories the Saints have enjoyed in 17 Premier League visits to Tottenham.

Spurs will however be struggling to replace the injured Harry Kane.

Spurs though defended really well after that and they managed to see out the victory to remain 10 points behind leaders Chelsea in second place.

Although Gabbiadini's unbelievable shooting has helped hugely in this department of late, Southampton's biggest problem remains converting their chances.

The reassuring truth, however, is that the sum of Tottenham's parts now extends beyond Kane's magnificent individual goalscoring feats.

The youngster won a penalty which he converted himself following Christian Eriksen's opener at White Hart Lane.

"I think (Son's performance) was good".

"The policy in this club for a lot of seasons has been to work with quality, for the promotion and evolution of young players, and it's important we continue", added Puel.

Tottenham nearly added a second in the 24th minute, though, as Eriksen picked out Toby Alderweireld from a corner, but Forster produced a fine save and then Saints threatened twice in quick succession. He opened the scoring with a nice finish and was the home's side best source of chances, impressing with his vision and range of passing.

Substitute Vincent Janssen almost calmed Tottenham's jitters with ferocious blast that Forster beat away while at the other end Sofiane Boufal rifled a shot just wide in the last minute.

It was a marvellous goal, too, as Eriksen marauded through central midfield before letting fly and dispatching a strike into the far left corner of the Southampton goal. Bertrand's cross should be easy for Alderwiereld to deal with but he misses it entirely and the ball runs to Ward-Prowse at the back post who chests before firing home.

Tottenham Hotspur (an aesthetic 3-4-2-1): Lloris; Dier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen; Walker, Wanyama, Dembele, Davies; Dele, Eriksen; Son. Subs: Trippier 6, Winks 7, Janssen 6.

Forster; Cedric, Stephens, Yoshida, Bertrand; Romeu, Davis; Ward-Prowse, Tadic (Boufal, min. 69), Redmond (Rodriguez, min. 80); Gabbiadini (Long, min. 32).

Spurs have wobbled over the past couple of months, though Mauricio Pochettino's side have also won two league games on the bounce.
