NC State to hire UNC-Wilmington's Kevin Keatts as men's basketball coach”

UNC Wilmington's Kevin Keatts is considered by many to be an attractive fallback coaching option for IL basketball, but the program's continued pursuit of better candidates may prevent any preliminary negotiations from taking place.

UNC Wilmington went 29-6 in 2016-17 and fell 76-71 as a No. 12 seed to fifth-seeded Virginia in the first round of the NCAA tourney.

Prior to taking the job at UNC Wilmington, Keatts was an assistant under Rick Pitino at Louisville from 2011 to 2014.

CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein tweeted on Friday afternoon that North Carolina State - who fired Mark Gottfried earlier in the season, but only parted ways with him after the ACC Tournament - will meet with Keatts today.

He has a 72-28 record in his three years with the Seahawks, which includes two NCAA tournament berths. UNCW went the the NCAA Tournament over the last two seasons.

Gottfried has a reputation as a capable recruiter, and he brought some good players to NC State.

This is still a pretty good coaching job to get.

Kevin Keatts is the latest man to be in charge of leading the NC State Wolfpack back to the glory days of the 1980s and Jim Valvano.

UNCW signed Keatts to a contract extension that would keep him with the Seahawks through the 2021 season.
