'World's heaviest woman' has surgery in India, loses 220 pounds

'World's heaviest woman' has surgery in India, loses 220 pounds”

Diagnosed with a parasitic disease called Elephantiasis - a condition that causes the limbs and other body parts to swell, leaving her nearly immobile - Eman also suffers from sleep apnea, hypothyroidism, diabetes, hypertension, kidney problems and fluid retention.

The world's fattest woman at 79 stone (500kg) has lost a fifth of her body weight in three weeks after flying for life-saving stomach surgery in India. "We are working on to correct all her associated medical problems so she gets fit enough to fly back to Egypt as soon as possible".

Weighing an estimated 500 kgs, Eman (36) was flown to Mumbai in a special cargo aircraft in February to undergo medical treatment for weight reduction.

She had already lost 18 stone before the op but doctors are now monitoring the further weight loss ahead of flying her back home to Alexandria, Egypt.

The story of this woman who had not been able to leave her home for 25 years had traveled around the world and moved an Indian surgeon who had proposed in the autumn to operate. "She had an uneventful surgery and anesthesia course", read a hospital statement.

The patient "is now fed with oral fluids and accepts them well".

At birth she weighed 11 pounds at birth and doctors diagnosed her with elephantiasis - a condition in which limbs or other body parts swell drastically due to a parasitic infection, her family said.

Despite her weight loss, the Egyptian would still be the biggest woman in the world.

Abd El Aty has suffered a stroke and faced a series of other serious ailments owing to her weight including diabetes, high blood pressure, hypertension and sleep deprivation.

In December 2016, Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj helped her obtain a visa to India, where a team of dedicated local doctors are supervising her case.

The bariatric surgery, which shrinks the stomach and is used as a last resort to treat people who are dangerously obese, took place Tuesday.
