TSA announces new 'more involved' full body pat-downs

TSA announces new 'more involved' full body pat-downs”

Starting this week, if you're chosen for a pat-down, it might be more invasive than before.

The agency was vague on the details of what this new approach would entail, telling Bloomberg that the searches would be "more thorough and may involve an officer making more intimate contact than before".

The TSA, in a statement, said that a full pat-down "does not involve any different areas of the body than were screened in the previous standard pat-down procedure".

TSA spokesman Bruce Anderson told the media last week: "I would say, people, who in the past would have gotten a pat-down that wasn't involved will notice that the [new] pat-down is more involved". Now, there will be just one type of physical search to which the TSA has described it to be a lot more "comprehensive".

A 2015 Homeland Security study that found TSA officers failed to detect smuggled weapons in 67 out of 70 attempts, a 95 percent failure rate.

He says in a wide open area, TSA officials conducted the pat down, pressing on the outside of his body and feeling the inside of his trousers. "This is something that's happened before.' He's like 'No we need to explain it to you because the rules have changed'".

Passengers will receive a pat-down by an officer of the same gender and can request private screening accompanied by a companion of their choice. Many people also decline to pass through an imaging scanner, which brings TSA to a question on how to have more effective body searches that the public won't deny. "You know, security's number one thing, and I don't care what happens to me as long as I get there in one piece", said Thomas Aquinas of Brooklyn.

Passengers are typically patted down if they set off the metal detector. Other times, TSA will conduct random physical checks.

An already-dreaded part of air travel has thus become that much more unbearable, yet many Americans are prepared to accept it. "Security is very important so do whatever is necessary to have a safe flight", traveler Judy Powell told WLS. The TSA insists the enhanced procedures will not cause delays at security checkpoints. Individuals transiting the TSA security checkpoint who have opted out of technology screening, or alarmed the technology or a canine team, will undergo a pat-down.

"The UPD [universal pat-down] lessens the cognitive burden for our officers and reduces the possibility for confusion with passengers and employees as well", the agency said.
