The train was eastbound shortly before 2:30 p.m. when it collided with a northbound charter bus, Biloxi spokesman Vincent Creel.

Three people have died after a train collided with a bus in Mississippi, US police have confirmed.

The intersection has gates and a crossing light, authorities said.

According to the Sun Herald newspaper, a total of 42 people were on the bus at the time, and 35 were injured.

The bus originated in Austin, Texas, and Miller said he believes it was headed to casinos in the Biloxi area. There were reportedly as many as 50 passengers onboard the charter bus.

Miller said it was still unclear to investigators why the bus had come to a stop along the tracks.

Biloxi is a city of 44,000 residents on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi.

The local hospital set up a triage unit near the accident to help treat injured passengers, according to the AP.

A MS, hit a charter bus that appeared to be stuck on the tracks Tuesday, according to local outlet WLOX. Neither Echo Transportation nor CSX immediately returned calls from The Associated Press.

CSX personnel are assisting first responders, Sease said.
