Georges St-Pierre to face Michael Bisping for UFC middleweight title

Georges St-Pierre to face Michael Bisping for UFC middleweight title”

Only Bisping (20) has won more bouts in UFC than St-Pierre's 19 and the Canadian is widely regarded as mixed martial arts' greatest welterweight, having held the UFC's belt at 170 pounds twice, including a six-year, 11-fight streak.

This Friday prior to the UFC 209 weigh-ins, the organization will host a Bisping vs. St-Pierre press conference to formally kick things off.

In terms of recent competition Bisping (30-7), the UFC's reigning middleweight champion, defended his 185-pound title with a decision over former rival Dan Henderson at UFC 204 in October.

UFC President Dana White made the announcement of the fight on Wednesday.

It's official, George "Rush" St-Pierre will be fighting Michael Bisping for the middleweight title.

I can honestly say I didn't see this coming. St-Pierre said he believed he was no longer under contract with UFC, claiming the promotion breached their deal by failing to meet a deadline to formally offer a fight.

"He wanted to take a break, he wanted to take some time off from the sport", said White.

Apparently a super fight between Conor McGregor and Georges St-Pierre was never on the table.

"(We were) not even close (to making a fight between McGregor and St-Pierre). He has yet to be tested, according to USADA's website. So in a flawless world, I fight Georges St-Pierre, I will beat Georges St-Pierre, I will not be injured in that fight Georges because Georges never injures anybody in a fight, and then I will do a quick turnaround, within six weeks I will fight Yoel Romero.

Rumblings about a potential St-Pierre return first came to surface when he attended UFC 196.

Little by little, Georges St-Pierre's return to the Octagon is becoming real.
