MWC 2017: BlackBerry KEYone unveiled

The first BlackBerry device manufactured and designed by TCL was unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Saturday, and the KeyOne is clearly aiming its first effort clearly at the hearts of longtime BlackBerry fans.

"The new BlackBerry KEYone comes with a 4.5" IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1620 x 1080 (3:2 aspect ratio) and pixel density of 433 PPI.

The smartphone has a 12-megapixel rear camera with a Sony IMX378 sensor - reportedly the same one present on the Google Pixel.

On the inside, the new BlackBerry smartphone will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 mobile platform with an Adreno 506 GPU and a 3,505mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 technology. BlackBerry claims you can get to 50 percent charge in 36 minutes. The phone comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, plus you can expand for more storage with a microSD card.

Having already given a hardware teaser at CES earlier in the year, BlackBerry has now officially outed its next smartphone, the KeyOne, created to tempt the hard-core BlackBerry fans to switch to Android, and invoke serious nostalgia in a serious phone.

The device has an "impact-resistant, soft-touch" back panel, and features a precision-crafted aluminum frame that helps to protect against accidental bumps.

For example, each key on the keyboard can be used as a shortcut so pressing "F" can bring up the Facebook Inc (NASDAQ: FB) app and "U" can pull up the Uber app.

Blackberry says that the KEYone will be available in key markets which are starting in April. Also, the company has retained the BlackBerry Hub which is an app for all kinds of texts, emails, chats or instant messages. As for the "selfie camera" there is an 8MP fixed-focus front camera that will be able to record 1080p video. However, there are still thousands of BlackBerry users in Ireland, even though the vast majority have quit the system for iPhones and Android devices.

One of the unique features of the phone is the smart keyboard where the space bar acts as a fingerprint sensor.

BLACKBERRYWhen will the BlackBerry KEYOne be available in the UK? The trademark BlackBerry keyboard has also been included at the bottom of the device. The device also has a physical keyboard under the screen, which is a rarity in smartphones these days. This year it's coming out with the KEYOne, for the whopping price of £499.

Connectivity options include 4G, VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy, NFC, 3.5mm audio jack and USB Type-C port.
