Group gathers at Statehouse rallying to keep Affordable Care Act”

President Donald Trump criticized the Affordable Care Act as late as Friday.

Since the healthcare law - popularly known as Obamacare - was signed into law, Republicans on the hill have been trying to dismantle it.

About 150 people, many employed in the healthcare sector, gathered outside U.S. Senator John McCain's office to show their support for the Affordable Care Act and urge Arizona's senior congressman to resist attempts to dismantle the law signed by former President Barack Obama. "We need to bring back democracy and justice to America", said Barbara Gregory, a protestor. Almost 1 million people in Beaumont's home state of Michigan have health coverage through the ACA or the Healthy Michigan Medicaid expansion plan. Under this model, the federal commitment to Medicaid is no longer open-ended; states get a set amount for each enrollee, likely less than what they get now but also with fewer strings attached.

"We had tried to get Mr. Rooney to come, but he said it wasn't on his schedule", Nayer said.

The congresswoman says Republicans in congress are working on several aspects of a new health care bill, which she says will include expanded opportunities for health care savings accounts and refundable, advanceable tax credits.

"It is impossible to have insurance that is comprehensive, covers everything and everybody, pays hospitals enough and pharmaceutical and medical device companies are comfortable with and is cheap", Simon said.

"You will see lots of people die, you will see people dying...we are a wealthy nation, we do not need to have that happen to our people", Holmgren stated. While some Republicans are concerned about the long-term financial feasibility of such an expansion, others are under pressure from constituents desperate for more affordable health insurance to support the expansion.

Any disruption to access and coverage would be devastating to the health of those who are now insured and receiving treatment for acute or chronic conditions. It has extended health care coverage to millions of Americans since its passage. Republicans know of this issue, which is why they have repeatedly pledged they would not take healthcare away from those who now get help with their individual coverage through the Health Market that Obamacare helped establish. Americans are watching closely to see how much the Republican-controlled Congress will change the current system.

"The majority of Americans believe Obamacare has been a failed experiment and it Is time to repeal and replace it". "Many people will not be covered", said Johnson. However, Katz and others said Los Angeles County should have a big role given its population and control of one of the state's most active public hospital systems.
