Floods in San Jose Push 14000 People Out Of Their Homes

The flooded neighborhood sits beside Coyote Creek, some 20 miles downstream from Anderson Reservoir, which is so full that water has been cascading down its spillway filling the creek to overflowing. "Right now, we've got to do whatever we can to get people out". "We are going to insist on continuing the evacuation period through today, until we have a better handle on what's happening with these water flows".

Mass flooding pummeled San Jose, California, Tuesday, leaving residents swimming in the streets and cars floating down currents of rainwater.

Anderson Reservoir had been releasing as much water as possible through its main outlet since January 9. Rescue workers sought to save residents as they waded through chest-deep water.

"I don't have specific numbers for other water rescue operations, but I can tell you in my career this is probably the biggest", San Jose Fire Department Captain Mitch Matlow said Tuesday afternoon.

Rock Springs resident Carmen Davalos told KGO-TV that she rushed to pack her minivan with keepsakes - like family photos - but she had to abandon her van to escape the rising water.

Residents of the flooded area, which is near downtown and is made up of apartment buildings and townhomes, would not be allowed to return to their properties on Wednesday, Liccardo said.

Andy Seoung was among the residents rescued by fire crews. Red Cross overnight shelters are open at Evergreen Valley High School and James Lick High School.

In Modesto, mobile home residents living along the Tuolumne River worked to clear out ahead of a surge of water from the Don Pedro Reservoir spillway.

The floodwaters also caused a miles long traffic jam, closing lanes of USA 101. "I just got it to where it quit leaking, and if I pull it, it will leak again", he said. Coyote Creek overflowed in Morgan Hill and in San Jose, including at the horse ranch.

The weather service issued a flash flood warning for Dayton, Nevada, on Tuesday, where authorities feared a dam might break and send 2 to 4 feet of water into low-lying areas.

Hundreds of homes were evacuated and several thousand people found themselves trapped in a rural hamlet as northern California emerged Tuesday from yet another winter storm.

Several schools were affected by the flooding including San Jose and Cristo Rey high schools.

The creek was rising because of water coming from Anderson Reservoir.
