Five Dead After Plane Crashes Into Melbourne Shopping Centre

His sister Denelle Wicht paid tribute to him on Facebook, saying: "my handsome athletic big brother was killed today in a plane accident while on his "once in a lifetime " trip to Australia".

The US Embassy has confirmed that four passengers on the plane were bound for Tasmania's King Island, the BBC said.

The pilot was described by NBC as an experienced aviator in his 60s, and the four Americans were passengers.

Leane said it appeared that no one aboard the plane had survived. It has been reported the pilot made mayday calls just seconds before the crash. It is understood the plane crashed into stores on the edge of the shopping centre, which does not open to the public until 10am.

A plane carrying five people has crashed near Melbourne's Essendon Airport in Victoria.

The flight history for the Beechcraft aircraft shows seven flights this month, including its latest from Adelaide International Airport to Essendon on February 4.

"I'm feeling very human, vulnerable and contemplative".

"Each work day I walk along the side of the runway, past numerous plane mechanic sheds and past the fuel depot".

"It falls to me to extend our sympathies, our best wishes, our prayers and through whatever we can do, our practical support, to the families of those who have been killed at Essendon Airport this morning", Andrews said.

An employee at Nick Scali told Sky News 'It's pretty confronting seeing a plane that low over the top of your head. Fire crews who attended the scene took 1.5 hours to extinguish the intense blaze, caused by the plane's load of aviation fuel, that the crash sparked.

"We tried to get to the cockpit, the flames were too intense, tyres were exploding. two cars were on fire".

A Spotlight spokeswoman said no staff were injured in the crash.

Another witness, Paul, said the scene was "like the vision you see of an atomic bomb".

"Glenn Garland was more than a colleague to me, he was a visionary and a close friend", said Jim Stimmel, the co-founder of Garland's old firm, CLEAResult.

"Then a massive explosion and a wheel went flying right into Tullamarine Freeway. if there's any saving grace for this it's that the plane didn't go onto the freeway".
