Miami Dolphins cut Mario Williams, hold off on Branden Albert”

Williams was released by the Miami Dolphins today after one disappointing season where he managed just 1.5 sacks.

The team is "hopeful but not necessarily optimistic" that they will be able to trade Albert, according to Salguero.

Albert, 32, has a $10.6 million for the 2017 season.

"Although the team had made a decision to release the 32-year-old veteran, spoke to him Thursday morning to break the news, and Albert told his agents he was out, the plans changed sometime Thursday afternoon", Armando Salguero wrote for the Herald. He played a total of 35 games in his three seasons in Miami and has appeared in two Pro Bowl games. He mentored Tunsil, who was a three-year starter at left tackle at MS and played mostly guard as an National Football League rookie after he was taken 13th in the draft.

Albert started 12 games for the Dolphins this season but had one of his worst campaigns as a pro.

The Dolphins saved $8.5 million in cap space by releasing Williams.

Williams' release is not a surprise. That worked out last year with Byron Maxwell (and Vance Joseph's only year as defensive coordinator), but there's no guarantee it'll play out that way again.

The Herald reports the Dolphins are also releasing defensive tackle Earl Mitchell and cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu. Albert is going to lose his job to Laremy Tunsil, and it seems like Williams has become less and less useful as time goes on.

Albert missed seven games in 2014, two in 2015 and four last season while battling knee and wrist injuries. He also missed the 2016 season after the Dolphins placed him on injured reserve on August 9, 2016.

Williams originally joined the Bills with great fanfare, signing a six-year, $96 million contract back in 2012 when he and the Texans couldn't come to terms. Unfortunately, their recent drafting will have them doing the bulk of that via free agency rather than promoting their own players on team-friendly rookie deals.

The Dolphins went 10-6 last season and made the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

He has 206 tackles and 5.5 sacks in his career.
