White House Reportedly Pulls Nomination Of Labor Pick Andy Puzder

"I want to thank President Trump for his nomination", Puzder said in an official statement, The Huffington Post reports. Less than 24 hours later, Trump has announced his replacement nominee, Alexander Acosta.

President Donald Trump's nominee for Secretary of Labor, CEO Andrew Puzder of CKE Restaurants, has withdrawn himself from consideration after mounting controversy over his past and concerns that he would not have the votes for confirmation. After working for about a year on the NLRB, he was appointed as an assistant attorney general for the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights division.

Acosta, 48, a Miami native, serves as dean of Florida International University Law School and was former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida.

Andy Puzder, the controversial fast-food executive who dropped his bid to become US labor secretary on Wednesday, will return to his job running the Carl's Jr. and Hardee's chains.

On Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) urged Puzder to withdraw, calling him "probably the most anti-worker" choice ever for the Cabinet position.

According to NBC News, while Democrats staunchly opposed Puzder's nomination because of his opposition to raising the minimum wage, in addition to his restaurants' racy ads, it was ultimately Senate Republicans that killed the nomination.

Acosta has served on the National Labor Relations Board and as a federal prosecutor in Florida.

Puzder withdrew on the eve of his confirmation hearing because Republicans balked at an array of personal and professional issues.

Fierstein later recanted her accusations, and has defended Puzder's nomination. Puzder said he has fully paid back taxes to the IRS and state of California.

The main sources of criticism were believed to be allegations from Puzder's messy divorce, his hiring of an undocumented worker in his home, his support for increased automation and his company's racy advertisements.
