The shooting occurred shortly before 2 p.m. near Ogden and Kostner, according to NBC Chicago.

Authorities are yet to identify the man, a known gang member who appeared to be the intended target, and his girlfriend.

Lavontay was the second child to die in Chicago on Tuesday as a result of a gunshot wound as the city continues to battle an uproar in gun violence. A 2-year-old boy, Lavontay White, was shot in the head and he died at the hospital.

Police said Lavontay White Jr. was shot in the head while sitting in the back of a auto. The woman runs from the vehicle screaming and yells that she has been shot in the stomach. Investigators believe it was her boyfriend in the auto, who was the target. The condition of the 12-year-old victim is unclear. Two-year-old Lavontay White was murdered in Chicago on the afternoon of February 14, later dying on February 15, in a gang-related shooting.

Johnson told reporters his "gut feeling" was that the shooter in the killing of two-year-old Lavontay will also turn out to be a repeat gun offender.

"We have very promising leads, we have video", Chicago Police Superintendant Eddie Johnson said. The pregnant woman, who is the toddler's aunt, was shot in the stomach and transported to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Holmes was pronounced dead on Tuesday while Gentry-Bowers remains in a critical condition. Police say Jones has an extensive criminal record, including a pair of domestic battery charges last November.

Johnson and Mayor Rahm Emanuel have repeatedly blamed the violence on a combination of increased gang activity and weak gun laws that they say don't do enough to dissuade convicted felons from carrying and using weapons. Police had not yet released the names of the shooting victims.

The violence on the expressways also prompted the Chicago Crime Commission to ask that state and federal officials find the money to purchase a high-tech "expressway video surveillance system".

"The issue is still creating a culture of accountability for people that fire weapons, and we're just not doing that", the superintendent said.
