Here Are the 2017 James Beard Award Semifinalists From Arizona

This year's list of semi-finalists for Restaurant and Chef Awards from the New York-based James Beard Foundation includes four names from the IN dining scene. The Boulder eatery regularly receives accolades for its wine program, its service and its chef, Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson (who is also co-owner). So far, despite making it to the semifinalist and finalist rounds year after year, no Orlando chef has won the category yet. Miles went on to be a finalist for the award previous year, but did not win.

Wisconsin natives listed in other categories include Phillip Foss of EL Ideas in Chicago, for best chef: Great Lakes, and Alex Seidel, a semifinalist for best chef: Southwest, this time for his second restaurant, Mercantile, in Denver. The James Beard Foundation Awards, known to industry folk as the culinary Oscars, is a little more baroque. This marks the fourth time Bhatt has been nominated for the award.

The annual James Beard Awards wouldn't be complete without a nomination for Frasca Food & Wine. He was a semifinalist for the same award previous year, and follows in the footsteps of St. George's founder Jörg Rupf, who received four James Beard nominations.

The awards include top honors such as Outstanding Restaurateur, Best Chef, Outstanding Restaurant and Best New Restaurant.

With the exception of Essex staple Schultz's Crab House, which clinched one of the foundation's America's Classics awards earlier this year, the two fine-dining spots were the only Maryland restaurants to make the cut for 2017. The same panel of judges will then name the winners in each category on April 25.

The Foundation will announce the final nominees for award categories March 15 during a press conference at a.o.c. restaurant in Los Angeles, California.

Among the semifinalists are five ME chefs nominated in the Best Chef: Northeast category.
