Several flights leaving ORF canceled due to storm in Northeast

NEW YORK -More than 2,000 flights were canceled, winter storm warnings stretched from ME to Maryland and salt trucks across the region were rolling Thursday as the season's most risky snow event rolled into the East.

Half a foot of snow was recorded in the Bronx by 9 a.m., while more than 7 inches had fallen in a number of upstate NY counties, according to the National Weather Service. Officials planned to dispatch more than 1,600 plows when more than 2 inches of snow accumulated. Eleven flights from there to here were also cancelled.

"We are in the heart of the storm right now in downtown Boston", said AccuWeather senior meteorologist Dave Samhuel at 4 p.m. "Snow is falling 3-4 inches per hour as we're at the peak of the storm".

Canceled flights are listed on a screen at Logan International Airport in Boston as winter storm conditions begin during the early morning on February 9, 2017.

In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) urged residents to "take extra precaution and avoid unnecessary travel" as more than a foot of snow is expected in parts of the state. Boston and other areas in MA are now expected to get 12 to 18 inches of snow over the course of the day.

In New York City, for example, three of the top five snowstorms of all time have occurred in the past decade.

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for all of Long Island until 6 p.m. Thursday.

The storm has affected several major freeways along the northeast corridor - including Interstates 68, 70, 76, 78, 80, 81, 83, 84 and 95. "But it's going to be a blizzard and New Yorkers should get ready".

The storm started as rain early Thursday in eastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey before changing over to snow. The department assigned 2,400 workers per 12-hour shifts. Temperatures will continue to drop into the 20s as snow finally begins to move out move out later this afternoon.
