Adama Barrow Gambian president-elect to be inaugurated in Senegal”

Soldiers from neighbouring Senegal stormed into the state to ensure Barrow would take office when former President Jammeh, who has ruled Gambia since 1994, refused to leave despite losing the election.

A statement issued at the United Nations headquarters in NY by the Secretary-General further expressed deep concern about the refusal of the former President Yahya Jammeh to step aside and about the high outflow of Gambians into Senegal. It's not clear if there is a new deadline for Jammeh to leave.

West African nations had deployed troops to The Gambia, threatening to drive Mr Jammeh out of office by force.

"The rule of fear" in the Gambia ended with Jammeh's rule, Barrow said late on Friday.

A Senegalese official confirmed Jammeh had agreed to depart, the Associated Press reported late Friday, while Reuters news agency cited an advisor close to Barrow confirming the news.

Under his leadership thousands of Gambians fled the country, risking a perilous journey to Europe by sea, because of political repression and a lack of economic opportunities at home.

According to incoming president Adama Barrow, who defeated Jammeh at the polls in December, Jammeh has agreed to cede power and go into exile.

Gambia's defeated leader Yahya Jammeh has said he has made a decision to relinquish power, after hours of talks with regional leaders and the threat by a regional military force to make him leave.

Sallah says that Jammeh's attempts to lend a "cloak of legitimacy" to his bid to stay in power have failed.

The Gambian president, who has been in power for 22 years, maintained his stance despite talks with West African leaders who urged him to step down peacefully.

"You cannot push us to war for an issue we can solve politically", Mr Badjie said.

Mr Barrow's inauguration ceremony in a small conference room at the Dakar embassy was attended by representatives from the Ecowas regional bloc of west African countries.

"We are not going to involve ourselves militarily". The country of 1.9 million people has about 1 000 soldiers, little capacity to fight a well-trained army, for example that of Senegal, which has nearly 20 000 troops. The African Union said that they would stop recognizing him as the president as of the next day.

However, the inauguration's head organiser James Gomez said plans for the transfer of power in a huge stadium outside the capital were now cancelled.
