Protesters Demand Promulgation of Jallikattu Ordinance, Panneerselvam Meets PM Modi”

The common complaint among the protest leaders was that the Supreme Court had insulted Tamil culture by disallowing the traditional sport observed during the harvest festival of Pongal. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and other animal activists then approached the apex court to strike down the notification.

Pointing out that Jallikattu was a ritual and not the game of a few rich people, Sri Sri Ravishankar said that he was in favour of making proper representation to the court in this regard for a fair hearing.

Advising a way out on similar lines, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi clarified that the SC judgment on Jallikattu did not preclude the State Government from passing a law regulating the sport since "sport" is a State subject under List III of the Constitution.

Meanwhile, the protest at Marina Beach in Chennai swelled manifold on Thursday with the protesters demanding that transport stays off the road on Friday.

A government led by Modi's predecessor did order a ban in 2011 but it was effectively ignored until last year's Supreme Court ruling. By no stretch of imagination, AWBI said, can it be said that Jallikattu or bullock-cart races have any historical, cultural or religious significance, either in Tamil Nadu or in Maharashtra, and argued that the Prevention of Cruelty Against Animals Act should supersede any such practices.

Legal battles over Jallikattu have pit animal activists against bull owners since the early 1990s.

Modi virtually indicated his government's inability to promulgate an ordinance on allowing jallikattu, noting that the matter was sub judice.

If the sport is banned, supporters argue that farmers will be forced to abandon raising of native livestock, that presently stands threatened due to the mechanization of agriculture.

As the Jallikattu row intensifies, Tamil Nadu is seen to be united on the issue for uplifting the ban imposed by the Supreme Court. The untameable bulls from the event are deemed to have better genes and are used especially for breeding, while the tamed ones are used for domestic activities and agriculture.

South Indian Artistes Association to fast in support of Jallikattu protesters.

She further added, "By the force of emotion and pride, I'm a Tamilian". PETA India, which is being targeted by the protesters, said it would serve no objective. With Chennai's Marina Beach as the nerve-centre, protests are going across the country and pockets with Tamil population in the world against the ban.

Between 2010 and 2014, at least 17 people were killed and 1000-odd injured during Jallikattu events.

If the sport was to be held before such a verdict was given, "only the central government has the powers to bring in an amendment to facilitate that", he said.
