Widow of Orlando shooter pleads not guilty to aiding him

Noor Salman, 30, formerly of Fort Pierce, Florida, was charged by indictment with aiding and abetting Omar Mateen's attempted provision and provision of material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), a designated foreign terrorist organization, and obstruction of justice.

She was taken into custody early on Monday at a house she shared with her mother in Rodeo, a community about 40km northeast of San Francisco.

Federal prosecutor Roger Handberg told magistrate judge Donna Ryu at an initial hearing on Tuesday that Salman was well aware her husband "was going to conduct the attack".

Her family and her lawyers say she's innocent - a naive victim of domestic abuse who knew nothing about Mateen's intention to mount an attack in the name of ISIS.

The indictment gave no additional details on Salman's alleged actions.

The case will likely be transferred to the Middle District of Florida, where Orlando is located and where a grand jury indicted her. She also went with her husband to buy ammunition at Walmart, but claimed she believed the ammunition was for target practice as part of his job as a security guard. Salman had her first appearance in federal court wearing a simple yellow jail shirt.

Her arrest came after she was interviewed numerous times by FBI agents investigating the June 12 attack in Florida. He said Noor Salman appeared to be trembling but it was unclear if she was nervous or cold. He died in a shootout with police after a 3-hour standoff at the club. As the U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of NY, current FBI Director James Comey faced criticism when his office prosecuted Martha Stewart for lying to investigators.

Salman was represented by a local attorney in the hearing, but will hire Texas lawyer Charles Swift, from the Constitutional Law Center for Muslims in America, for her trial. But she told The New York Times in November that she was unaware of his intentions until he sent her a 4 a.m. text message the night of the shooting, asking whether she had seen what happened on the news.

Instead, public defender John Paul Reichmuth, who is serving as Salman's attorney until one is appointed for her, entered not guilty pleas to two charges.
