Serena Williams puts shock exit down to wind

Serena Williams puts shock exit down to wind”

Playing her first tournament since her semi-final loss at the U.S. Open last September, Serena was left to rue the 88 unforced errors she made in the contest against an opponent 70 rungs lower in the WTA rankings.

There was also an upset in the singles in Auckland as world No. 2 Serena Williams slumped to a 6-4, 6-7 (3/7), 6-4 defeat to fellow American Madison Brengle. ". Eighty-eight is way too many unforced errors".

After blaming rust for her sluggish first-round win over Pauline Parmentier on Tuesday, she succumbed in abject fashion a day later with a double-fault on match point at 4-5 in the third set in the blustery conditions.

"It was so windy out there, but I guess in the wind you really have to be ready to move your feet", Williams said.

"I really think I played um, I'm trying to think of a word that's not obscene. but that's pretty much how I played", she told a media conference.

Brengle: Do you feel like if I played even uglier off the return, is that a good idea? I think I probably have never returned like that in my life so a little frustrating, especially since I worked so hard in the off-season, but at least the conditions won't be like this in Melbourne. "I really abhorred these conditions".

Brengle: You mean like if it flies and hits me in the body and I die.

In the second set she saved five set points before losing the tiebreak to Serena.

The final set went with serve until the crucial 10th game.

"Honestly I don't know (how I won)", Brengle, 26, said.

The performance was a far cry from their lone previous encounter, as Williams dropped just one game in a decisive victory in Madrid in 2015.

Williams beat New Zealand wildcard Jade Lewis in a first-round match and was due to play Japan's Naomi Osaka in the second round later Wednesday but withdrew before the match. And then she hits a victor.
