Trump on meeting Taiwan's president: 'We'll see'

Trump on meeting Taiwan's president: 'We'll see'”

The call risked souring United States relations with China, which considers Taiwan a breakaway province.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Saturday said that China could hurt its ties with Taiwan over its growing economic and military saber-rattling.

Third, the government will work to maintain peace and stability in volatile global situations and play a more active role in regional affairs, Tsai said.

"This will test the resilience of all of our national security team and the overall government".

USA president-elect Donald Trump had called up the Taiwan president after his election moving away from the "one-China" policy which states the U.S. doesn't have any official ties with Taiwan.

China's increasingly assertive moves to push its territorial claims in the disputed South China Sea, including building artificial islands, have unnerved its neighbours.

Earlier this week, the spokesman for the Chinese Cabinet's Taiwan affairs office called Taiwan the "most sensitive and complicated issue in China-US relations".

China has repeatedly urged the U.S.to prevent Tsai from transiting, warning that such a visit would embolden independence activists in Taiwan.

What the world is seeing today is that China is emerging more aggressive not only towards Taiwan but also towards all of its neighbors through challenging sea lanes of communication and commerce and showing an ever-increasing militarism, the analyst opined, adding that this has happen due to the United States' poor leadership.

China's sole aircraft carrier, accompanied by several warships, sailed close to Taiwan this week, which followed on from air force exercises also close to Taiwan.

"Some things have happened between (Taiwan and China) or this region".

"Step by step, Beijing is going back to the old path of dividing, coercing, and even threatening and intimidating Taiwan", she said.

Fredrick Peterson maintains that there is no rational justification for the U.S. to remain loyal to its previous "One China" policy in a situation wherein Beijing is threatening the existence of Washington's allies in the region with its aggression.

Tsai said Saturday that Taiwan would not meet Beijing with "resistance" but rather "maintain our status of peace and stability". "But don't forget that we are a sovereign, independent nation and this is a recognition by the collective (in Taiwan)", Tsai said.

Further drama looms with Tsai's transit through the United States next month for a Latin America trip. "So, I think that the problem is the United States and not China".
