Honda Odyssey minivans recalled due to rear seat defect

Honda says 52,710 minivans sold between 2011 and 2016 are part of the voluntary recall.

According to Honda, the recent move has been prompted by a defect on the second-row seats of the minivan.

Under certain circumstances, second-row seats might not lock during a crash for models spanning from 2011 to 2016. The seats need the ability to move so as to allow access to the third row of seating, however, the lever can be left in an unlocked position without any indication that the seats are not secure and could still move. The lever could stay unlocked, causing the second-row seat to move unexpectedly, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) documents.

In total, 633,753 Odyssey minivans are affected, all of which were manufactured between August 17, 2010 and October 1, 2015. "Until the required fix has been performed on each vehicle, Honda recommends that, after using the walk-in feature, vehicle owners should slide the seat into the desired position and manually lock the seat into a fixed position by pushing down on the horizontal position adjustment bar". The fix takes the form of an additional bracket and spring fitted to both second row outboard seats.

No injuries have been reported and owners will be notified via e-mail regarding the defect.

No reported injuries have been linked to the issue, which was discovered in internal-quality checks, Honda said. From there, an authorized Honda dealer will inspect the latch mechanism and adjust it (if needed, ) to ensure proper operation.

While the schedule is confirmed in the NHTSA website, the USA Today report states that Honda will be proceeding with the recall starting February.

A larger swath of Odyssey minivans have been recalled in January 2013 because of missing airbag rivets.
