Chancellor Hammond will announce £1 billion to roll out 'full-fibre' broadband

Chancellor Hammond will announce £1 billion to roll out 'full-fibre' broadband”

Now only around 1 million premises in the United Kingdom have access to full-fibre - described as the "gold standard" of broadband - and which is more reliable, and faster, than current broadband.

The government has committed to investing over £1bn by 2021 in rolling out full-fibre connections and building on future 5G communications, Phillip Hammond announced in this week's Autumn Statement.

"The new fund is overly focused on giving city based homes and businesses access to fibre to the premises, hyperfast broadband", he said.

But he warned: "We won't achieve the necessary step change in driving full fibre investment across the country unless Ofcom also takes bold and decisive action on the future of Openreach".

Despite the government claiming the United Kingdom to be a leader in broadband infrastructure, a survey from the European Commission earlier this year revealed rural Britain to have a worse service than Slovenia, Lithuania and Cyprus.

"Fibre to the premises (FTTP) is the future - businesses need faster and more reliable broadband across the UK". The government has said that the "gold standard" label applies to networks with the "capacity to reach speeds of more than 1Gbps".

Let us know what you think of the Chancellor's plans in the comments.

The announcement followed reports earlier this week that Hammond would be announcing a £400 million kickstart investment for a full-fibre rollout and £740 million towards the development of 5G, with Vodafone UK welcoming the investments.

The £400million will fund the extension of faster fibre-optic networks across the nation - and the public money will be matched by private investment.

"On the world stage pushing the United Kingdom further up the league tables may now be seen as politically important, but the Government must not neglect those with slower broadband and while we do expect a chunk of the two million premises to be those with under 10 Mbps speeds, the fund is not explicitly aimed at them".

The government is also expected to provide almost $920 million to local councils to fund trials of "5G" technology and the roll out of ancillary infrastructure, including further fiber deployments.

The UK telecoms industry has reacted positively to the government's pledge to support the rollout of fibre to the premise broadband.

The UK government is to invest an additional £1 billion in speeding up the country's broadband.

It has made a big bet on G.Fast, which is being rolled out to 10 million homes by 2020.
